- Transit vs Self-Propelled – What’s the difference?
Transit Wheelchair (Attendant Propelled):
- Smaller rear wheels
- Must be pushed by a carer
- Lighter and cheaper – from £129
- Best for: Hospital appointments, shopping trips, short-term use
Self-Propelled Wheelchair:
- Large rear wheels with hand rims
- You can push yourself
- Heavier but gives you independence
- Best for: Everyday use at home and outside
Our advice: If the user has good arm strength, choose Self-Propelled. If they need to be pushed, save money and choose Transit.
- What Size Wheelchair Do I Need?
Measure the hips. This is the most important measurement.
- 16 inch seat: Slim adult / small lady
- 18 inch seat: Average adult – our most popular
- 20 inch seat: Larger adult
- 22 inch seat: Bariatric / extra wide
Seat height: Standard is 19.5″. If you are tall (over 6ft), you need 20.5″.

- Steel frame: Cheaper (£129-£199), heavier (15-17kg), very strong
- Aluminium frame: Lightweight (£199-£399), 10-12kg, easy to lift into a car boot
